The team arrived in Chile for the Valparasio on Monday with James Haydon (Jimmy) hoping for a top 9 GC finish and some solid stage results. The field looked strong with Pino Pelgrims and his Hog Bay team looking like the main favourite. Steffe Elssen also arrived in TF, along with Bud Castleberry and David Lefauheur.
The tour started well as Jimmy found some consistent form in the hills whilst the big hitters struggled. After a strong display in the downhill stage and the king stage that followed, Jimmy set up a one on one shootout on stage 6 with all rounder Steinar Bredesen for the win. The stage began slowly... then the Belgian alliance of Elssen and Pelgrims made a long range attack to move up the GC, sparking a frenzy of moves and one of the most exciting Valparasio stages of all time. James kept his cool and came in 5th on the day, which was enough to take the GC by 47 seconds ahead of YC winner Rudi Goagoseb.
A surprise winner.... even we didn’t see this one coming. It’s also a win that gives hope to the opportunists who show up to tours aiming for a top GC finish without TF.
As the English media focuses on the national team and their run to the final of the Euros, we thought it would be a good idea to put this win on the front page. Maybe this is an omen for things to come...... is football really coming home?
